JENNY & ROHAN
In some ways it feels like yesterday I photographed Jenny & Rohan on their wedding day, and here I am photographing them with their gorgeous first born baby boy Judah.
When it comes to photographing newborns, you never know what to expect. Will they be happy, grizzly, fidgety or all of the these. Then throw in the two family cats – Im just going to say we tried and you will have to just check out the photos for the fun (animated) series of shots.
While no newborn session is perfect, for a number of reasons – being new parents and still finding your feeding and sleeping routines and so on, I’d hate to lead parents up that magical garden path of perfection, because we all know life just doesn’t play out that way. But that is what I love about shooting newborn lifestyle photography.
Newborn lifestyle photography is about the raw, genuine, real moments between the parents and their new baby. The everyday of raising children isn’t perfect, and I think its time that we acknowledge that in our family photos. Besides that, real is so much more fun! Naturally in the session I capture a variety of images, of course the happy smiling faces, different combinations of people together, details of the nursery, but I also equally love the scrunched up silly faces and capturing tantrums … blackmail to embarrass them in years to come! haha
Back to Jenny & Rohan’s session with Judah, apart from trying to get both cats to sit in the one family photo, baby Judah was an absolute angel, along with very proud new parents. Oh and lucky grandma popped by at the right time and got a few photos with her grandson! With newborn sessions I love including the grandparents too.
Bath time is a great activity to do during a newborn session, especially in the kitchen sink! where the family cat can watch with curiosity … haha.
I love that Jenny & Rohan (big Star Wars fans) decorated the nursery with Star Wars sheets and bedtime reading material so Judah can get up to speed. Check that Star Wars baby mobile – representing R2-D2, C-3PO, Chewbacca, Yoda and Princess Leia! which mum Jenny made herself – one talented mumma! When Jenny & Rohan decorated the nursery they didn’t know what gender their baby was, so if Baby J was a girl, she was still getting a Star Wars nursery – that would have been so awesome for the girl Trekkies.
While Judah had a little sleep in the nursery, I got some photos of Jenny & Rohan. I love the way the front door and hallway created like a spaceship corridor … stretching maybe, but seems appropriate … haha.
