Celebrating the beauty in the everyday!
Beauty can be found in the ordinary everyday. Remembering it’s about the little moments and not always the grand gestures. Heartfelt hugs, big smiles, dirty faces and giggling out loud. If any of these feelings make your heart skip a beat, invite me to capture your family.
Imperfectly Perfect : tearing down the idea of the perfect family to be shown in a more realistic light – of parenthood, families, childhood and home as it actually is – full of chaos and raw beauty.
Your family photos shouldn’t be contrived, staged or overly posed. They should be natural, show emotion, and a direct reflection of your family’s relationships which makes your story yours. I embrace unconventional and different. Does this sound like your family? then read on …
I am the professional photographer behind Deb Boots LOVE STORIES. I have been running a successful wedding photography business for a number of years. Over the years I have photographed so many wonderful couples getting married, who then go on to have families. In the early years of my career, I didn’t have enough available time amongst the weddings to offer those couples newborn and family photography. It was a little sad to sit back and watch their family grow from the sidelines after being an integral part of capturing their wedding day memories. So at the start of 2015, I made the decision to cut back on the number of weddings I shoot each year to be in a position to offer both my wedding couples and other families the opportunity to enjoy a documentary family photography session much like the way I shoot weddings, heartfelt and candid photos.
One reason why I avoided newborn portraits in the past, was that I didn’t want to go down the path of the perfectly posed baby photos in a studio setting. Not that there is anything wrong with that style of baby photography, as the photographers that shoot that style create beautiful baby art for the new parents, but that’s just it, it’s art created in a studio setting. The more I researched studio baby photography, and discovered the parents were less hands-on during the session, creating an artificial scene with props and so on, it wasn’t how I pictured newborn photos. Plus there are plenty of great portrait photographers offering studio photography already. Realising I wanted to capture the emotions of new parents embracing and welcoming their little one into their home, it was important to have the parents involved, take place in their home environment (so they didn’t have to leave home with a new baby) and to have memories of the nursery. That is why I offer in-home documentary newborn photography. Read on to find out how my style differs.
The studio newborn photography is just one particular style, but I’d like to introduce families to another way of capturing their family – documentary family photography.
“The best thing about a picture, is that it never changes,
even when the people in it do.”
– Andy Warhol
Documentary stories of real family life
What I love seeing in family photos is more than just faces looking at the camera. I want to capture emotions and the family having fun together. Capturing families in a documentary and lifestyle manner, to tell authentic stories of family life, just as I like to tell the real story of the wedding day. When I start asking around, those couples that wanted natural wedding photos, now as parents are also wanting natural family photos.
My wedding photography is all about documenting couples LOVE STORIES. My documentary family photography is all about documenting the next phases of a couple’s life beyond the wedding day with the Deb Boots LIFE STORIES sessions.
