Well it’s Day 1 back in the office after a nice little holiday in the country. I am feeling recharged, refreshed, inspired and excited for the year ahead. I’m ready for a new year, and a new morning regime to kick start my morning routine.
I was back on the tools on Saturday with my first wedding of 2016 and there will be a sneak peek coming soon. But I can tell you after a few weeks off, I really noticed I need to up my game on my fitness this year, I’m not getting any younger! haha
The way you start the day, impacts the rest of the day. And it’s about time I made some changes.
Successful people use morning routines to help set themselves up for success everyday. Anna Wintour, Editor-In-Chief of Vogue, plays tennis at 5.45am every morning and Michelle Gass, President of Starbucks, wakes up every morning at 4.30am for a run. These successful business people set routines so they can achieve the most out of their day!
“If today were the last day of my life,
would I want to do what I am about to do today?”
– Steve Jobs
I know you’re thinking “I’m not a morning person”, anyone can learn to be a morning person. I believe it’s a matter of switching gears and re-adjusting your mindset because anyone can be a morning person. Stop using this as your excuse and start spending as much time living as you can. It might be hard when you start, but once you get in the habit, it will be easier, I promise it will, it has too, because I’m taking a new approach to my morning routine as of today.
If you are like me and work from home, you don’t wake to any alarm clocks, so you need that extra bit of motivation to get you out of bed each day. Us Queenslanders are pretty lucky though with the sun shining quite early, which I find helps to motivate you to get out of bed. There is nothing like the sun’s rays and light to invigorate you – there are even studies about how important Vitamin D is for us, just make sure you slap on some sunscreen.
I’ve started my first day back with a morning walk, and it has to be the year I kick my Coke sugar addiction so drinking more water, but I will never give up my coffee!
I believe putting things in writing or telling people, that it makes you more accountable and more chance of you sticking to it. So this is making me accountable for my actions and I will kick start your morning routine principals.
If you are looking to mix up your morning routine like me, here are my best tips to starting a morning routine to kick start your day for success:
Tip 1. // Get out of bed.
Don’t lay in bed dreading getting up, just getting up will make you feel a hundred times better. Having a morning routine with a structured set list of things to-do will help you get through to that first coffee. But first, wash your face with a splash of cold water to wake you up and refresh your skin.
Tip 2. // Exercise.
Go for a brisk walk. Walking will ease you into the day and get you motivated for the day ahead. Exercising releases endorphins which stimulates your brain. Depending on your fitness, you might like to go for a jog, bike ride, yoga or gym session. If it’s a new routine, ease it to it. If you are anything like me, you jump in wholeheartedly and overextend yourself, and that can have a negative effect, so take it slow for your body to adjust so you don’t stop your morning routine before you begin. Make sure you have your iPhone/iPod on charge the night before so you have music for your exercise, there is nothing like your favourite playlist to get you motivated!
Tip 3. // Hydrate.
Drink water, drink more water. You can never hydrate your body enough. It is amazing how some h2o can make your body feel good. Start with downing a glass of water. Add a squeeze of lemon as it’s a great detoxifier.
Tip 4. // Coffee.
Okay coffee addicts this one is for you. Have that coffee because that simple task of feeding your mind with something that satisfies you, will at least get your brain out of ‘I need coffee’ gear.
Tip 5. // Morning Reset.
Have 10 minutes to focus on yourself to set the tone for the rest of the day. A good time for this is while you are having that cup of coffee or tea. Create your daily to-do list for the day. Keeping a simple daily to-do list will make your list achievable. I like technology, so for me I use my iPhone’s iCal and Notes for my list of things I need to achieve each day, but you could go old school and use a diary or notebook, whatever works for you!
Tip 6. // Breakfast.
Eat a healthy breakfast of muesli, yoghurt and seasonal fruit … yum … and a fresh juice. It’s a well known fact that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and kickstarts your metabolism. Make sure you have all the ingredients is the easiest way to stick to having a daily healthy breakfast. I actually prefer going out to a cafe for breakfast instead of going to a restaurant for dinner – maybe that makes me a morning person? but then Im definitely a night owl too! I find having a substantial breakfast fuels me for the day and I’m not craving a naughty snack at morning tea.
Good luck with your morning routine.
Have you got an awesome morning routine? I’d love to hear about it.
