THE MUST HAVE FAMILY PHOTOS AT YOUR WEDDING!

The family photo list should include the group photo of all the wedding guests as well as a number of family photos.

While we live in times where we have mixed families, how many family photos and what family groupings, comes down to the choice of each individual couple.

With many couples choose to stick to the immediate family members – mum, dad, siblings, sibling’s partner and family, grandparents and any step-parents/siblings. Other couples add in extended family members as well – aunts, uncles and cousins. While other couples also add in friend groups.

Just keep in mind more groups will require more allocated time than just the immediate family groups.

I typically allow 15 minutes for immediate family and up to 30 minutes for extended family and friends, and allocate additional time for the all-in group photo.

An example of a family photo list :

PERSON 1’S FAMILY (BRIDE OR GROOM)

The Newlyweds plus …

  • Person 1’s parents
  • Person 1’s parents and siblings
  • Person 1’s parents, siblings and grandparents
  • Person 1’s parents, siblings/partner/children, and grandparents
  • Person 1’s grandparents ( mum’s side )
  • Person 1’s grandparents ( dad’s side )
  • Person 1’s Extended Family – mum’s side of the family including aunts, uncles & cousins
  • Person 1’s Extended Family – dad’s side of the family including aunts, uncles & cousins
  • Person 1’s Friends Groups ie. school, work friends etc.

PERSON 2’S FAMILY (BRIDE OR GROOM)

The Newlyweds plus …

  • Person 2’s parents
  • Person 2’s parents and siblings
  • Person 2’s parents, siblings and grandparents
  • Person 2’s parents, siblings/partner/children, and grandparents
  • Person 2’s grandparents ( mum’s side )
  • Person 2’s grandparents ( dad’s side )
  • Person 2’s Extended Family – mum’s side of the family including aunts, uncles & cousins
  • Person 2’s Extended Family – dad’s side of the family including aunts, uncles & cousins
  • Person 2’s Friends Groups ie. school, work friends etc.

If parents are separated or divorced, I can certainly adapt the list to allow for separate parent photos, as well as include any step-parents/siblings.

Following the family portraits, it’s time for the wedding party & couple portraits. We have two options here – we can stay at the venue or head off to a beautiful location off-site. Generally 4-8 weeks before the wedding, I will have sat down with the couple to decide on the location. But lets head over to wedding party location photos & couple portraits for inspiration.
